Achieving a healthy weight in our modern world is hard for us all - monumentally so. In this inspiring, heartfelt and deeply practical book, Dr Gary Leong embraces the complexity of the obesity challenge and shows how to harness the power of families to transform their lives and communities by approaching the challenge “just one thing at a time”. This has to be the way of the future. We must learn new habits, follow Gary’s KINIMS (yes, he makes up words too), and “ride together” to break the cycle of obesity.

Dr Leong takes a holistic approach that encourages the whole (extended) family to consider not just the eating, activity and sleep habits that underpin a healthy lifestyles but also a whole range of emotional, social, cultural and community factors that make important behaviour changes needed to achieve a healthier lifestyle so challenging. The book includes powerful family stories and plenty of practical ideas and exercises to assist parents to take charge and identify, plan and implement the changes that are right for their own family.

Meet Dr Gary Leong

I am a paediatrician (a children’s doctor), and a paediatric endocrinologist (a doctor qualified to diagnose and treat disorders of the endocrine glands and hormones in children). Through my clinical practice I have treated hundreds of children and families at public and private clinics in Sydney and Brisbane, including at the KOALA clinic and the Kids Fit 4 Future Clinic.

While I was trained to diagnose and treat children medically, after years of practice I felt this approach was only working to a point. I felt compelled to bring a more integrated approach to treatment. I found the emotional, mental and socio-cultural aspects of the disease must be considered equally too.

This book outlines a potentially life-changing program that I have developed called the Ride to Life program. It encourages you to courageously and honestly confront the underlying reasons for the obesity affecting your child. But it is also about parents and children taking appropriate levels of personal responsibility and then taking action to make sustainable, manageable change for a better, healthier, active and more purposeful life.

Gary’s riding passion

Gary or Dr K, or Dr Koala, as some call him, is no ordinary children’s doctor! Over the last four years, I have had the pleasure of riding with Dr K on several major Smiling for Smiddy (SFS) five-day cycle challenges to raise money for cancer research for the Mater Foundation Brisbane.

Dr K has a passion and commitment to being physically active with his cycling. He uses this in part to inspire the families and children he sees in his clinic who suffer from obesity and diabetes. I wish Dr K all the best with his book and the Ride to Life program to inspire more families to start an active, healthy life.”
